The woo-woo dance aerobics class was AWESOME. The instructor was a real curvy girl about my age wearing a shirt that said Love Your Body on the front and What's Not To Love? At The Brandywine YMCA on the back. Black and hot pink. I want one!

Anyway, there were at least 40 participants. The lights were dimmed a bit and some people took their shoes off for the class. There was a framework of steps, sometimes a jazz square, sometimes a step-step-step-kick thing, and sometimes a grapevine kind of move, but what we did with our bodies was totally up to us. We were instructed to be aware of planes (low, middle, and high) and to be aware of where we wanted to move our bodies with the different steps.

And then we would have little free dance periods between the base choreography. Also, we were encouraged to make sounds when we added little flourishes to our moves. Like a HUNH with a kick or a REAOWR if we lunged or a WHUSH if we spun. Oh, AND we would do this thing where we made "shapes in space" and tried to strike different poses and balance that way. It was really fun and playful. They have it on Wednesdays and on Saturday mornings.

That sounds like a lot more fun than I was picturing.

It really was pretty fun. I love to move and dance and be silly, and it was a great outlet for that. I don't think adults play enough, you know?

And no one seemed unwashed or into tye-dyed batik fabrics.

I agree with you there. I'm no dancer, but I do sometimes get a little silly at home when no one's looking.

Sometimes I put a little baloney in my shoes.

Is that a Southern expression?

I think it's more of a family expression. Good one though, huh?

It was a frequent question around our house when I was a kid. "Did you put baloney in your shoes this morning?!?"
