May. 2nd, 2009 11:32 amMy grandma passed away last spring and my grandpa, who suffers from age-related dementia and a resultant lack of short-term memory, has been living since then in an eldercare facility near my uncle Tim in Oregon. It's a nice place and he likes it, apparently. He was pictured three or four times in the last newsletter, playing cards and eating dinner and socializing. Recently, my uncle found out that my grandpa has a girlfriend, one of the other patients at the facility. Tim was upset for a while, but talked to my mom and their other two siblings and realized he was being irrational. So the next time he called Grandpa, he asked about the girlfriend.
T: So, Dad, I hear you're dating someone there?
G: Huh? Oh, uh, yeah. I have a girlfriend now.
T: What's her name?
G: ... Rhonda? Uh. Sheronda? Hell, I don't remember.
T: Oh! Well... is she good-looking?
G: Huh. About as good-looking as you would expect an 80 year old woman to be, I guess.
T: ::laughing::
I think it's good that my grandpa has found someone with whom to hold hands and talk about remembered snippets of well-lived lives. It's probably sad and confusing to be without my grandma, and he deserves any kind of comfort that companionship offers.
